I bought my laptop in Denmark, so I’ve done the comparing-three-shops-for-the-same-model routine. Here’s what to look for and when prices drop.
Quick answer
Most programmes only need a light laptop with 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD and a battery that lasts a full day. Buy in late November around Black Friday or in the August back-to-school sales, and check Apple’s education store for student prices. For Windows laptops, compare prices at Proshop, Komplett and Dustin.

What you need for your programme
| Programme | What matters | Minimum to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Humanities, social science, business, law | Battery life, weight, keyboard | 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, 8+ hours battery |
| Computer science, data science | RAM, and a decent processor for running code | 16 to 32 GB RAM, recent Intel Core Ultra, AMD Ryzen or Apple M-series chip |
| Engineering, architecture (CAD, simulation) | Dedicated graphics card; check whether your software runs on Mac | 32 GB RAM, dedicated GPU, Windows unless your programme says otherwise |
| Design, video editing | Screen quality, graphics performance | 16 to 32 GB RAM, colour-accurate screen |
Before buying, check your programme’s website or ask older students. Some engineering programmes require Windows-only software, and a MacBook won’t run it without workarounds.
Mac or Windows?
A MacBook Air is the most common laptop in Danish lecture halls for a reason: long battery life, no fan noise, and good resale value when you graduate. It’s also more expensive, and some engineering software doesn’t run on it. A Windows laptop gives you more choice at every price, and repairs and upgrades are often cheaper.
When to buy
- Black Friday and Cyber Monday, at the end of November, bring the biggest discounts of the year.
- Back-to-school sales in August, aimed at students.
- New-model launches, when the previous model drops in price.
Avoid buying in a rush the week before semester starts, when prices are back to normal.
Student discounts
Apple runs an education store in Denmark with student prices; you verify your student status online. Some other manufacturers run student programmes through platforms like UNiDAYS. Compare the education price with retailer campaigns; a Black Friday price is sometimes lower.
Where to buy
| Good for | Links | |
|---|---|---|
| Proshop | Large Danish electronics shop with a wide laptop range and frequent campaigns | Browse Proshop laptops |
| Komplett | Nordic online shop; strong on gaming and high-spec laptops | Browse Komplett laptops |
| Dustin | Business laptops (Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude) that last for years | Browse Dustin laptops |
Compare the exact model across shops before you buy; the same laptop often differs by several hundred kroner.
Protect it
A laptop is usually the most expensive thing a student owns. Check whether your contents insurance covers it outside your home and against accidental damage. In Denmark you also have a two-year right to complain (reklamationsret) about faults that were there when you bought it, so keep the receipt.
FAQ
How much should I spend on a laptop for university?
For most programmes, 5,000 to 8,000 kr buys a laptop that lasts the whole degree. Engineering and design students may need more.
Is a MacBook good for university in Denmark?
For most programmes, yes. Check first whether your programme uses Windows-only software, which is common in engineering.
Do I get a student discount on laptops in Denmark?
Apple’s education store offers student prices. Retailers mostly don’t, but their Black Friday and August campaigns are often just as cheap.
Last checked: October 2026. Prices and campaigns change constantly. Compare the exact model before you buy.
